SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 7) – Behind a pair of key pitching performances and a high-scoring offense, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team claimed a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty on Monday afternoon at the Savannah Invitational, winning 11-0 and 13-5.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 7-5 overall this season and head coach
Mike Conte surpassed the 400-win plateau (401-275-4). Conte, who became the school's all-time winningest coach earlier this season, is one of only 50 active head coaches in NCAA Division II (230 programs) with at least 400 victories. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers fall 2-5 this year and have been out-scored by a combined 67-7 over the last three days.
Junior
Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts in Game 1. He has now recorded an impressive 40 strikeouts in only 26.0 innings this season and boasts a2.08 ERA through four starts (4-0).
Junior outfielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) belted his first career grand slam and added a RBI triple in the 11-0 victory, while sophomore second baseman
Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) collected three hits.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the first, Cal U added a pair of runs in the third before plating six runs in the fourth. In the fourth, senior right fielder
Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) tallied a RBI double before scoring on a single by freshman designated hitter
John Orr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler). Following an error and a single by King loaded the bases, Handza registered his first career grand slam to give the Vulcans a 9-0 lead. Senior second baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) then added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a two-run double.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) earned the win after tossing 4.2 innings of relief and registering five strikeouts.
Senior shortstop
Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) paced the offense, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and three steals. Ordy and senior left fielder
Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) each went 2-for-3 with two walks, while Faust added two hits and two RBI in the win.
Cal U took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a RBI double by Teagarden and bases-loaded walk by King before West Liberty countered with three runs off starter
Ryan MacNamara (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle). The Vulcans reclaimed the lead by scoring two runs in the third before adding three runs in the fourth, 7-3. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth, Teagarden lined a two-run double before Faust followed with a RBI single.
After the Hilltoppers scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, the Vulcans sealed the win with five runs in the sixth behind RBI singles from Faust, freshman right fielder
Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) and Ordy. West Liberty again scored a run in the sixth before junior
Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) capped the scoring on Monday with a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8, when it plays Shippensburg at the Savannah Invitational with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
