LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (March 29) – The Vulcans snapped their five-game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon at Foundation Field with a doubleheader sweep against Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 1-0 and 8-5.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 13-10 overall and 3-5 in league play. Meanwhile, Lock Haven also stands at 13-10 this season with a 4-4 mark in divisional action.

In Game 1, sophomore Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout to earn his first victory of the season (1-3). He registered a season-high nine strikeouts with no walks on Tuesday. In the win, Thomas faced just one over the minimum and prevented the Bald Eagles from moving a runner into scoring position.

Cal U manufactured the game's only run in the top of the first inning. Senior shortstop Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second before senior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) collected a two-out RBI single.

Thomas then retired the first six hitters for Lock Haven before allowing a single in the third to the leadoff hitter, who he picked off for the third out of the inning. The Steel Valley product then retired the side in order in both the fourth and fifth before yielding a two-out single in the sixth.

Lock Haven's Tyler Golden (2-2) suffered the loss in the pitchers' duel after allowing just one run (earned) on four hits and three walks in 7.0 inning with seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Vulcans scored four runs in both the third and fifth to earn the 8-5 victory. Senior Ryan MacNamara (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) earned the win after yielding four runs (one earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Kyle Weary (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) registered the save after tossing 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one run (unearned) on one hit.

Lock Haven jumped out to 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Cal U took a 4-2 lead in the third. Senior right fielder Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and sophomore catcher Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) started the inning with singles before advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore second baseman Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) followed with a three-run homer (first of his career) to give the Vulcans a 3-2 lead. Junior center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) later added a RBI double that scored Teagarden, who also reached on a double.

The Vulcans expanded their lead to 8-2 in the fifth with a two-run, bases-loaded double by senior left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and an error that allowed two runs to score. Lock Haven answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning behind a two-run homer by left fielder Cory Dorman. The Bald Eagles scored their final run of the game in the sixth on error before Weary retired the final five batters of the game in order.

The trio of King, Handza and Petty finished with two hits in the nightcap, while King and Teagarden each scored a pair of runs.

Bald Eagles' starter Brandon Renoll (1-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (all earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.
