WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 25) - The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team was limited to just four runs in a doubleheader sweep by Lock Haven on Friday afternoon at Ross Memorial Stadium, losing 5-1 and 4-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the losses, the Vulcans drop to 11-10 overall with a 1-5 mark in league action. Cal U has now lost five-straight games for the first time since March 2005. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles improve to 13-8 this season behind a 4-2 record in divisional play.
In Game 1, junior
Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) suffered his first loss of the season (5-1) and third loss of his career (18-3) after allowing five runs (all earned) on 10 hits with no walks in 5.0 innings (106 pitches). He also registered nine strikeouts to increase his PSAC-leading total to 57 this year.
The Bald Eagles broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when left fielder Cory Dorman lined a bases-loaded single up the middle, 1-0. After Sturgill struck out the next two batters, catcher Brian Kochik belted a grand slam down the just over left-field fence on a 3-1 count to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Cal U answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Senior first baseman
Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) and senior left fielder
Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) led off the inning with back-to-back singles before senior right fielder
Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) walked to load the bases. The Vulcans then plated their only run of the game when sophomore catcher
Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) hit into a fielder's choice at second.
In the seventh, the Vulcans had runners on first and second with one out before Bald Eagles' starter Andrew Simonik retired the next two batters to earn the complete-game victory. Simonik improved to 3-2 after yielding one run on five hits and three walks in 7.0 innings (92 pitches).
Five different Cal U players collected hits (all singles) in the loss at Ross Memorial Park.
In the nightcap, the Vulcans scored two runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but managed only one base runner over the final three innings. Sophomore starter
Tyler Zimm (Fayetteville, W.Va./Oak Hill) was saddled with the loss (2-1) after allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits and four walks in 3.2 innings (76 pitches) of work. Freshman right-hander
Kyle Weary (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) followed with 3.1 innings of hitless relief.
Lock Haven took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits and two walks before Cal U countered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore second baseman
Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) reached base on a leadoff error and moved to second when senior shortstop
Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) reached following a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt. Senior second baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) then executed a sacrifice bunt with a throwing error allowing him to reach safely and King to score from second. After a walk loaded the bases, Lock Haven recorded three-straight outs to preserve the 2-1 lead.
The Bald Eagles expanded their lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and RBI single by center fielder Scott Zubak, 4-1. In the bottom of the inning, Faust led off with a single and moved to second on a single by freshman designated hitter
Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California). A groundout then moved both runners into scoring position before Teagarden reached on a two-out, infield single that allowed both runners to score and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Lock Haven starter Jordan Yohn (4-1) tossed a complete-game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings (115 pitches).
In Game 2, six different Vulcans collected hits with King and Links each posting doubles.
Cal U is tentatively scheduled to conclude its PSAC West series with Lock Haven on Sunday, March 27, with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
