Cal U claims sweep of Salem International

BUTLER, Pa. (March 16) – In their first action in over a week, the Vulcans claimed a doubleheader sweep at Pullman Park against Salem International, winning 9-0 and 5-3.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improved to 10-5 after winning its last five games. Meanwhile, Salem International remains winless at 0-13.

In Game 1, four Vulcan pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout against the Tigers. Sophomore starter Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) earned the win (2-0) after allowing just one hit and registering six strikeouts in only 4.0 innings (52 pitches). Senior Corry Ryan (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), freshman Kyle Weary (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and junior Pat Gannon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) each worked 1.0 inning of scoreless relief in the victory.

After Petty retired the first six batters of the game, Cal U took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Senior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) and senior left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) started the inning with walks before both scored on a double by senior shortstop Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), who was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Player of the Week yesterday. After Teagarden stole third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star).

Petty then struck out the side in the third before the Vulcans plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-0 lead. Senior third baseman Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) opened the rally with a single and eventually scored on a fielding error when Links followed with a single. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Links scored on a sacrifice fly from senior right fielder Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey).

Cal U continued to add to its lead in the fourth when Links belted a three-run homer (first of the season), 8-0. The Vulcans plated their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Faust scored on a RBI single by sophomore second baseman Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg).

The trio of King, Links and Teagarden each finished the game with two hits, while Links also scored three runs.

Salem International starter Elliot Swiatly suffered the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (all earned) on five hits and six walks in only 3.2 innings (93 pitches).

In the nightcap, senior Ryan MacNamara (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) earned his first win of the season after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings of relief (73 pitches). He scattered just two hits and registered a season-high eight strikeouts. Junior Eric Francis (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) took a no-decision in his second start of the season after allowing three runs on six hits in 2.0 innings (43 pitches).

The Tigers jumped to a 3-0 lead behind four singles in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and two outs, right fielder Jayson Barnes lined a two-run single before shortstop Michael Holbert followed with a RBI single. The Vulcans answered with a two-out, two-run double by Links in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.

After a scoreless second, Cal U tied the score in the third on a RBI single by Ordy before taking the lead in the fourth. Welsh led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Faust followed with a RBI single before he scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by King.

King and Faust each finished 2-for-3 in the nightcap with King scoring a pair of runs.

Tigers' starter Kyle Koedyker was saddled with the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.

The Vulcans open PSAC West play this weekend with a four-game series against Slippery Rock, starting Friday, March 18, with a doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock, Pa. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
