Vulcans claim sweep at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. 27) – After a complete-game victory by junior Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) in Game 1, the Vulcans posted an 11-6 win in the nightcap to claim a doubleheader sweep against Charleston on Sunday at Triana Field.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 5-3 this year. Meanwhile, Charleston opens its season at 0-2.

In Game 1, Sturgill allowed one run and scattered six hits to improve to 3-0 this season. The 6-1 left-hander issued only one walk and registered a career-high 12 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Sturgill has now posted 16 all-time victories and is only one win shy of moving into a tie for eighth-most in school history.

The Vulcans broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when junior center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) belted a solo homer (15th career). The Golden Eagles then evened the score at 1-1 on a groundout in the fifth. Cal U reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh when Handza, who started the inning with a double, scored on a groundout by senior left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East). Sturgill then sealed the victory by registering three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.

Handza collected two of the Vulcans' three hits in the Game 1 victory.

Golden Eagles' starter Anthony Pagano suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks in the complete game.

In the nightcap, Cal U collected 15 hits and nine steals in an 11-6 win over Charleston. Sophomore second baseman Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led the offensive effort, going 4-for-5 with one RBI, two runs and two steals. Handza finished with two hits, two RBI, two runs and four steals. Senior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East), Welsh and senior right fielder Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) each posted two hits in the victory.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Vulcans scored five runs on five hits and one error to take a 6-1 lead in the top of the second. Faust started the inning with a double before scoring on a throwing error, while junior designated hitter Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) reached on a walk and scored on a RBI single by King. Handza followed with a two-run single and scored the final run of the inning on a two-out single by Welsh.

Cal U added a run in the third before plating four runs in the fourth to expand its lead to 11-1. Charleston answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the seventh, 11-6.

Sophomore starter Tyler Zimm (Fayetteville, W.Va./Oak Hill) earned the victory after allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks in 5.0 innings. Fellow sophomore Kyle Thomas (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) retired the Golden Eagles in order in the sixth before junior Eric Francis (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) yielded four unearned runs in the ninth.

UC starter Tim Ponn was saddled with the loss after being roughed for six runs (all earned) on eight hits in 2.0 innings.

The Vulcans return to action with seven games from March 5-10 at the Savannah Invitational hosted by Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.).
