Enslin wins event, Cal U moves into third

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 19) – Freshman Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews School for Girls) captured the title in the 200 freestyle and the 200 medley relay established a new school record on Saturday, as the Vulcans moved into third place in the team standings at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships hosted by Cumberland Valley High School.

Enslin won the 200 freestyle after posting a time of 1 minute, 51.35 seconds in the final. The South African is the second California University of Pennsylvania swimmer in as many nights to win an event at the championships and joins former All-American Ester Bosh (2008, 2009) as the only Vulcans to win the 200 freestyle. Enslin also posted the top time in the preliminaries of the 200 freestyle before reaching an NCAA Championship 'B' qualifying time in the finals.

In the 200 medley relay, sophomore Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg), junior Melissa Gates (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), freshman Jess Machmer (Canton, Pa./Canton) and Enslin posted a record time of 1:44.80 to finish second in the finals of the event. The time broke the previous school record set at the 2009 PSAC Championships by over 1.3 seconds.

As an individual, Gates finished fifth in the finals of the 100 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:05.85.

Sophomore Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who won the 500 freestyle last night, place fifth in the 400 IM on Saturday with a time a NCAA 'B' time of 4:34.42. Freshman Kate Mellon (Queensland, Australia/Mansfield State) also competed in the 400 IM, finishing second in the consolations and 10th overall with a time of 4:37.56.

The quartet of freshman Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola), Mellon, sophomore Caitlyn Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and Emert placed eighth in the 800 freestyle relay, accounting for 22 team points after posting a time of 7:52.91.

The Vulcans featured back-to-back finishes in the 100 butterfly, as sophomore Bruna Carvalho (Belem, Brazil/Milton Campos) and Machmer finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the consolations. Carvalho posted a NCAA 'B' time of 58.57, while Machmer touched the wall in 58.57 seconds.

On the third day of the PSAC Championships, Cal U moved past IUP for third place in the team standings with 245 points. West Chester, the four-time defending-conference champion, stretched its lead after accumulating 436 points, followed by Clarion (367), Cal U and IUP (229).
