MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 18) – Sophomore
Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) won the 500 freestyle, as the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team moved into fourth place in the team standings on Friday at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships hosted by Cumberland Valley High School.
Emert captured the championship in the 500 freestyle after posting a time of 5 minutes, 0.59 seconds in the finals. The Lancaster native is the fifth different swimmer in school history to win an event at the championships and joins former All-Americans Sandra Buehler (2003) and
Ester Bosch (2009) as winners in the 500 freestyle. Emert placed fourth in the preliminaries before reaching an NCAA Championship 'B' qualifying time in the finals.

Melissa Gates (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), sophomore
Bruna Carvalho (Belem, Brazil/Milton Campos) and freshman
Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews School for Girls) established a new school record and finished fifth in the finals after touching the wall in 3:53.05. The Vulcans broke the previous school record set at the 2009 PSAC Championships by over eight-tenths of a second.
As an individual, Gates placed second in both the preliminaries and finals of the 50 freestyle. The five-time PSAC Swimmer of the Week finished with a time of 23.28 seconds in the finals, only two hundredths of a second behind her school record. Enslin was close behind in the 50 freestyle after touching the wall in 23.82 seconds to place fourth in the finals.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Gates, sophomore
Caitlyn Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), freshman
Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola) and Enslin finished second after posting an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 1:35.10.
Through the first three sessions of the PSAC Championships, the Vulcans have totaled 121 points to rank fourth in the team standings. Defending-conference champion West Chester leads with 194 points, followed by Clarion (163), IUP (127) and Cal U.
