Swimming finishes second at Citrus Classic

MESA, Ariz. (Jan. 7) – In its first action in over a month, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team finished second at Citrus Classic on Friday while competing against schools from all over the country.

The Vulcans won a pair of events at the event, finishing only behind NCAA Division Nebraska in the team standings with 108 points. The Cornhuskers won the event with 173 points, followed by Cal U and Siena (N.Y.), another NCAA Division I program.

The 200 medley relay of sophomore Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg), junior Melissa Gates (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), freshman Jess Machmer (Canton, Pa./Canton) and freshman Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews School for Girls) won the event by seven-hundredths of a second with a time of 1 minute, 49.83 seconds.

Gates captured an individual victory in the 100 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:06.73. Her time was over a second faster than the rest of the field, which featured a handful of NCAA Division I swimmers. She also placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.28 seconds.

Enslin also posted impressive individual performances at the Citrus Classic. In the 200 freestyle, she finished second overall behind only Nebraska's Bailey Pons with a time of 1:56.66. The 5-7 freshman also placed third in the 50 freestyle after posting a time of 24.60 seconds, behind only two Cornhusker swimmers.

Sophomore Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and Machmer posted back-to-back finishes in the 200 IM. The Cal U duo finished eighth (2:16.76) and ninth (2:19.89), respectively, behind six Nebraska and one Siena swimmers. Emert also placed seventh overall (behind five Cornhuskers) in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.65.

Sophomore Caitlyn Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and freshman Kelsey Nuhfer (Warren, Pa./Warren) finished sixth overall in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.52) and 100 freestyle (56.39), respectively, behind four Nebraska swimmers and Gates, a three-time NCAA Division II All-American.

In the 1000 freestyle, freshman Kate Mellon (Queensland, Australia/Mansfield State) touched the wall in 11:10.15 to place seventh overall behind only six Cornhuskers. Classmate Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola) was close behind at 11:21.26 to finish ninth in a field of 21 swimmers.

The Vulcans are idle for over two weeks before returning to action on Jan. 22 when they face Duquesne in their dual meet of the season.
