CALIFORNIA (Jan. 29) – The California University of Pennsylvania swimming team established five pool records and won 16 events over the weekend, as it won the two-day, four-team Vulcan Dual Meet Challenge at Hamer Hall.
The Vulcans totaled 817 points to win the invitational after finishing second at the home event last season. Kutztown finished in second place with 697 points, followed by Lock Haven (494) and Mansfield (150) in the team standings.
Junior
Melissa Gates (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) broke a pair of individual pool records and was a member of three record-setting relay teams over the weekend. In the 50 freestyle, she touched the wall with a NCAA Championship 'B' qualifying time of 23.73 seconds, which broke her own pool record by two-tenths of a second. The three-time All-American also broke the pool record in the 100 breaststroke by two-tenths of a second after touching the wall in 1 minute, 5.71 seconds, another NCAA 'B' time. Gates also earned individual victories in the 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke at Hamer Hall. In the 100 freestyle, she swam a NCAA 'B' time of 52.62 seconds while she touched the wall in a meet-record time 30.49 seconds in the 50 breaststroke.
In the 200 freestyle relay, freshmen
Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews School for Girls),
Kelsey Nuhfer (Warren, Pa /Warren),
Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola) and Gates won the event with a pool-best time of 1:38.34, breaking the previous mark set last season.
Gates, Nuhfer, Bolt and Enslin also won the 400 freestyle relay and set a pool record after touching the wall in 3:34.99, which eclipsed the previous mark by just over two-hundredths of a second.
As an individual, Bolt posted the top times in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, finishing with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship qualifying times in each event. She won the 200 freestyle by under four tenths of a second with a time of 1:58.15. A native of Sweden, Bolt also swam a time of 5:17.58 to win the 500 freestyle by over two seconds.
In the 400 medley relay, sophomore
Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), Gates, sophomore
Bruna Carvalho (Belem, Brazil/Milton Campos) and Enslin registered a record time of 3:59.88. The relay won the event by nearly 10 seconds and broke the previous pool record set last year by two-plus seconds.
Carvalho also posted victories with a time of 59.75 in the 100 butterfly and 2:11.14 in the 200 butterfly. Freshman
Jess Machmer (Canton, Pa./Canton) won the 50 butterfly after touching the wall in 27.21 seconds
Emert earned the win in the 400 IM with a time of 4:44.55, while Enslin claimed the victory in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 1:00.77.
The Vulcans conclude their regular season on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Pittsburgh to compete Carnegie Mellon, Clarion, Grove City and the host Panthers at Trees Pool.
