CALIFORNIA (Aug. 26) – The NCAA ruled on Thursday that California University of Pennsylvania tennis standout
Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa./Laurel Springs) has not violated any amateurism rules and restored her senior eligibility for the 2010-11 season.
Cohen joined the Vulcans last spring and registered an impressive 5-0 record in singles play with four victories against nationally-ranked opponents. She last competed for Cal U in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 against Grand Valley State (Mich.) before sitting out the quarterfinals due to allegations of amateurism violations.
“This has been a long difficult process and I'm thankful that it's over. The Cohen family has made a tremendous financial sacrifice in keeping Julia as an amateur so that she will get an education,” said Cal U Athletic Director
Dr. Tom Pucci. “She is an outstanding student. We are very thankful and excited in the fact that she will be a part of our tennis program for the 2010-11 season.”
Prior to joining the Cal U program, Cohen was an All-American at Miami (Fla.) in 2009 after being selected the SEC Rookie of the Year in 2008 while competing at Florida.
In addition to time with the Vulcans, she is currently the No. 172-ranked singles player on the Sony Ericsson Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour while playing as an amateur.
