No. 20 Women's Soccer shuts out Gannon, 2-0

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 15) – With goals by freshman Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and sophomore Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell), the No. 20 Vulcans earned their fourth-straight shutout on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-0 victory at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play. Meanwhile, Gannon drops to 2-2-1 this year with a 1-2 mark in conference action.

After a scoreless first period, Smyda tallied the game-winning goal in the 54th minute off a pass from senior forward Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca). The Vulcans added an insurance goal at the 88:49-mark when Work converted a two-on-one opportunity after taking a feed from Smyda.

Junior goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) tallied her second shutout of the year after making a season-high six saves. In five games this year, Jackson has made 12 saves while playing over 420 scoreless minutes. Meanwhile, Golden Knight Sabrina Chirco collected eight saves on 17 shots in 90 minutes.

Cal U continues PSAC play on Saturday, Sept. 18, when it hosts Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available by clicking here. Last year, the home team won each game with the Vulcans posting a 3-2 overtime win at Roadman Park.
