SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 6) – Senior outfielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) set the career school record for steals on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans opened the Savannah Invitational with a doubleheader sweep against West Liberty, winning 1-0 and 11-5.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 3-3 this season.

DiMatteo now has 80 career stolen bases to eclipse the previous all-time record set last season by former teammate Jon Selby (2006-09). Last year, the duo of DiMatteo and Selby combined for 74 steals with DiMatteo setting the single-season school record at 40 stolen bases.

In Game 1, redshirt sophomore Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) threw a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 victory for the Vulcans. The 6-1 left-hander registered nine strikeouts and issued one walk in his second career complete-game shutout. After pitching only 1.0 inning last year due to injury, he boasts a 2-0 record with a 1.00 ERA over 18.0 innings in three starts this season with 23 strikeouts and only 3 walks (7.7:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio).

Junior left fielder Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored the game's only run after reaching base on a triple before scoring on a game-winning RBI single by sophomore catcher Anthony Lamont (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver).

Welsh also helped preserve the shutout for Sturgill after throwing out a runner at home.

In the nightcap, Cal U posted an 11-5 victory after four players posted multi-hit games. Senior hurler Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) earned his first win of the season (10th of his career) against the Hilltoppers.

Junior second baseman Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) collected a pair of hits and also stole three bases. Welsh, junior Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) and newcomer Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) also added two hits in the victory.

Sophomore center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) belted a solo homer in the nightcap after posting two hits in Game 1.

The Vulcans return to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday, March, 7, when they face West Liberty for a nine-inning game at 10 a.m.
