Vulcans fall at Seton Hill, 5-1

GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 24) – The Vulcans managed only one run on five hits on Wednesday afternoon, as they suffered a 5-1 non-conference loss to Seton Hill.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team falls to 11-10 overall this season. Meanwhile, Seton Hill improves to 13-9 this year after winning 10 of its last 11 games.

Trailing 4-0, the Vulcans scored their lone run of the game in the top of eighth on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center), his 23rd RBI of the season.

Junior Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three over 5.0 innings. Starter DJ Cannon earned the win for Seton Hill after scattering four hits and registering six strikeouts over 6.0 scoreless innings.

The Griffins opened the game by scoring two runs on four singles in the bottom of the second. Seton Hill later had the bases loaded before Welsh forced a comebacker to escape the fourth inning without allowing a run. However, the Griffins expanded their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a walk, wild pitch and two flyouts.

In the sixth, Seton Hill added a pair of two-out runs on RBI singles to increase its lead to 5-0 before Cal U collected its run on a sacrifice fly.

The Vulcans return to league play when they open a four-game series with Clarion, beginning with a doubleheader at CONSOL Energy Park on Friday, March 26, at 1 p.m.
