CALIFORNIA (NOV. 6) – Competing in its second meet of the season, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team set four Hamer Hall pool records (two individual, two relay) on Saturday afternoon.
The Vulcans were victorious in the meet by registering 122 points to Gannon's mark of 68 and Lake Erie's total of 10.
The win marks the first of the season for the Vulcans as they opened in record setting fashion as freshman
Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews), sophomore
Caitlyn Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa/Plum), freshman Jessica Machmer (Canton, Pa./Canton) and junior
Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) eclipsed the previous pool-best mark in the 200 medley relay after touching the wall in one minute, 49.41 seconds.
Enslin also earned a pool record in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:52.73 eclipsing the previous record set by
Ester Bosch in 2009. Gates added another pool record to her growing list of accolades in the 100 Freestyle by finishing with a time of 51.89 previously held by Bosch.
The final record setting performance of the afternoon was in the 800 Free Relay, when Gates, Enslin, sophomore
Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman
Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns) registered a time of 7:51.36, good for the pool record.
Bolt and Emert also earned individual victories at the meet. Bolt claimed wins in the 500 freestyle and 1000 freestyle, while Emert garnered victories in the 400 IM and the 100 Backstroke.
Two Vulcan swimmers recorded NCAA provisional B qualifying times on Saturday. Both Gates and Enslin's performances in the 100 and 200 freestyle events earned them consideration to compete at nationals this upcoming spring.
The Vulcans return to action on Thursday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Indiana (Pa.) for the annual Pidgeon Invitational.
