INDIANA, Pa. (Nov. 20) – The California University of Pennsylvania swimming team finished second on Saturday at the John A. Pidgeon Memorial Invitational hosted by IUP behind several record-setting performances, including two school records and five invitational relay records.

Junior Melissa Gates (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) won the finals of the 100 freestyle with a NCAA Championship automatic-qualifying time of 50.41 seconds. With her performance, she broke her own school record set last March by 0.49 hundredths of a second. Gates broke another one of her school records with a time of 1 minute, 5.45 seconds and boasted a NCAA Championship 'B cut' in the 100 breaststroke. The three-time All-American also claimed the title and set an invitational record in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in a blistering 23.46 seconds – another NCAA 'B' qualifying time.

Freshman Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola) recorded three times that are NCAA provisional-qualifying marks. In the 1650 freestyle, she won the event by nearly 15 seconds after posting a time of 17:58.04. Bolt also claimed the victory in the 500 freestyle with a NCAA time of 5:09.31.

Fellow freshman Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews School for Girls) had an individual win in the 200 freestyle after touching the wall in a NCAA 'B' time of 1:51.05, breaking the invitational record by nearly five seconds. The South African also registered NCAA 'B' times in the 50 and 100 freestyle, along with the 100 backstroke.

The 400 freestyle relay of Enslin, freshman Kelsey Nuhfer (Warren, Pa./Warren), Bolt and Gates won the event with an invitational-record time of 3:28.69, missing the NCAA automatic-qualifying time by only three-tenths of a second.

The same quartet of Enslin, Nuhfer, Bolt and Gates also earned the victory in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.37, breaking the previous invitational record by over two-tenths of a second.

In the 200 medley relay, sophomore Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg), Gates, freshman Jess Machmer (Canton, Pa./Canton) and Enslin won the event with an invitational-record time of 1:46.79. The 400 medley group of Enslin, Gates, sophomore Bruna Carvalho (Belem, Brazil/Milton Campos) and Bolt touched the wall in 3:55.97, another invitational record.

The relay of Enslin, Gates, freshman Kate Mellon (Queensland, Australia/Mansfield State) and Bolt established a new record in the 800 freestyle with a time of 7:47.71, breaking the eight-year mark by 7.37 seconds.

The Vulcans, who now have 11 qualifiers for the Pennsylvania State Athletic (PSAC) Championships, posted a score of 893.5 points at the eight-team event, trailing only the Crimson Hawks at 1,077 points.

Cal U is idle next weekend due to the holiday before returning to action on Dec. 3-4 at the Grove City Winter Invitational.
