Swimming wins 10 events at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 23) – In its first action of the 2010-11 season, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team won 10 combined events (seven individual), qualified 14 entries for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships and finished second at the Lock Haven Quad on Saturday.

The Vulcans totaled 757 points in the team standings, trailing only Kuztown (772). The host Bald Eagles finished third with 603.5 points and East Stroudsburg rounded out the standings with 537.5 points.

In her college debut, freshman Stephanie Bolt (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola) won both 200 and 500 freestyle – qualifying for the PSAC Championships in both events. In the 200 freestyle, Bolt posted a time of 1 minute, 58.98 seconds to win the event. A native of Sweden, she captured the win in the 500 freestyle after touching the wall in 5:20.64.

Bolt was also a member of two of three winning relay teams for the Vulcans. In the 200 freestyle relay, junior Melissa Gates (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), sophomore Caitlyn Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), Bolt and freshman Clarissa Enslin (Dalview, South Africa/St. Andrews School for Girls) won the event by over four seconds with a time of 1:38.10.

Enslin and Gates both also swam NCAA Championship “B cuts” in the 100 freestyle. Gates won the event with a time of 52.95 seconds, only one-hundredth of a second ahead of Enslin. Also making her college debut, Enslin captured the victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.63 seconds to qualify for the PSAC Championships. Gates also qualified for the league championships in the 100 breaststroke, finishing second with a time of 1:08.57.

The quartet of Enslin, sophomore Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), Bolt and Gates claimed the victory in the 400 freestyle relay by nearly seven seconds after registering a time of 3:38.08. In the 400 medley relay, Emert, Gates, sophomore Bruna Carvalho (Belem, Brazil/Milton Campos) and Enslin captured a win in the event with a time of 4:04.10.

Carvalho won both 100 and 200 butterfly, qualifying for the league championships in both events. She posted a time of 2:13.72 in the 200 butterfly, while claiming a mark of 1:00.55 in the 100 butterfly.

Freshman Kate Mellon (Queensland, Australia/Mansfield State) won the 1000 freestyle by over four seconds after touching the wall in 10:53.70. The Australian also qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly.

A NCAA Championships qualifier last year, Emert posted PSAC Championship-qualifying times in three events at Lock Haven: 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 IM. Freshman Jess Machmer (Canton, Pa./Canton) and Sirkoch qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 100 butterfly and 200 breaststroke, respectively.

The Vulcans are idle for two weeks before returning to action on Nov. 6 when they host Gannon and Lake Erie in a tri-meet at Hamer Hall.
