Volleyball earns two wins at Flyer Festival

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 12) – The Vulcans collected a pair of wins against Winona State (Minn.) and Illinois Institute of Technology at the two-day Lewis (Ill.) Flyer Festival over the weekend.

With the two victories, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 8-4 overall this year.

Senior Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.82 kills per game while hitting at a team-best .300 clip at the Flyer Festival. The All-American middle hitter also led the team with eight total blocks (two solo).

The Vulcans opened the Flyer Festival with a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-17, 11-25, 25-23) over Winona State (Minn.) of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). In the win, senior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) recorded a double-double with a team-high 19 kills with 17 digs. Amaral collected 15 kills on 31 attempts for a .419 hitting percentage, while senior Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) finished with nine kills. Junior Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) led the team with 23 digs, while Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) finished with 20. Sophomore setter Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) directed the offense with 38 assists and five digs.

Cal U then suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss (18-25, 13-25, 25-21, 26-24, 11-15) to host No. 20 Lewis on Friday evening. Amaral led the Vulcans with 15 kills and five blocks, while sophomore middle hitter Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added nine kills. Five Vulcans posted double-digit dig counts, led by 17 from Paronish and 14 from Moore. Eshleman collected a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs.

The Vulcans closed the two-day tournament with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-11, 25-14) over Illinois Institute of Technology, a NAIA program, on Saturday. Nist collected a team-high 11 kills and seven digs, while Moore paced the defensive effort with 13 digs. Eshleman engineered the offensive attack with 27 assists.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, Sept. 18, when it hosts a two-day Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover tournament at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans will face East Stroudsburg and Lock Haven – the defending-PSAC East champions – in the tournament's opening day.
