Baseball falls at Seton Hill, 11-7

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team dropped an 11-7 non-conference contest to Seton Hill University on Wednesday, snapping a seven-game winning streak.

The Vulcans fall to 25-8 overall, while the Griffins hold a 23-8 record.

In the loss, junior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and four runs scored. Senior centerfielder Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) added three hits, while senior shortstop Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) collected three RBI.

DiMatteo gave Cal U an early 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run longball (10th of the season, ranks sixth in single-season history) that scored freshman left fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler), who started the game with a leadoff single and then stole two bases.

Seton Hill countered with a pair of runs in the first to tie the game at 2-2 before claiming a 4-2 lead with two more runs in the second inning. Busti made it a 4-3 contest with a RBI single in the third. However, the Griffins plated runs in the next three innings to increase their lead to 9-3 after five innings.

In the top of the sixth, sophomore designated hitter Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) belted a two-run double to the trim the deficit to 9-5. The Vulcans added another run in the seventh with a RBI sacrifice fly by Busti before the Griffins sealed the game with two insurance runs in the eighth, 11-6. Cal U scored its final run of the game in the ninth on a groundout by Busti.

Freshman right-hander Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) (4-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs in the first 1.1 innings. The Vulcans used a combined five pitchers in the contest with freshman Anthony Lamont (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) working a team-high 2.2 innings and sophomore Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) throwing two scoreless innings.

Junior Andrew DiNardo earned the win for Seton Hill after tossing 5.0 innings of relief. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The Vulcans are scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 10, when they open a four-game conference series against rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The series begins with two games at Indiana, Pa., and the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
