No. 12 Vulcans win PSAC Team Championship

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (April 25) – For a school-best third-straight season, the No. 12 Vulcans captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Team Championships on Saturday following a 5-0 victory against Bloomsburg University.

The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team moves to 20-2 on the season, marking the third-straight 20-win campaign. The Vulcans, who are the top seed in the Atlantic Region, will likely receive their fifth-straight NCAA Championship Tournament selection on Wednesday, April 29.

In doubles play, the Vulcans won the three matches after surrendering only five games. The 11th-ranked national doubles team of graduate student Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) posted an 8-2 victory against Bloomsburg's Emily Palko and Alison Carney – the ninth-ranked regional doubles team. Freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) and sophomore Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) improved to 8-0 this season as a doubles team after earning an 8-1 win against Katie Hasyn and Kristen Bonito at second singles. Freshman Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and sophomore Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) finished with an 8-2 victory over the Huskies' Laura Sullivan and Andrea Malatesta at third doubles.

In singles play, VanEysendeyk (pictured right) – the second-ranked player in the nation – registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory over regionally-ranked Hasyn at first singles. Zherdeva improved to 11-0 at fifth singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Malatesta.

VanEysendeyk was named the PSAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after finishing with a combined 3-0 record in wins over Kutztown University and Bloomsburg – two of the top 10 teams in the Atlantic Region.

Over the last three seasons, Cal U holds a combined 74-7 overall record (.914) with three PSAC West and Team Championships.
