LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April 18) – The No. 29 California University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept a road doubleheader on Saturday with Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 4-3 and 8-6.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 30-11 overall and 15-5 in league play entering the final week of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 16-30 overall and 9-11 in divisional action.
In Game 1, junior right-hander
Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) tossed his first complete game of the season in his first start in almost a month. He allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Freshman leftfielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) led off the game with a triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Senior centerfielder
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) then reached on a double and scored on a RBI single by senior third baseman
Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). Sophomore second baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) drove in the final run of the inning with a two-out double.
Lock Haven trimmed the deficit to one run, 3-2, after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Bald Eagles then tied the contest at 3-3 in the sixth before Cal U scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Selby opened the inning with a leadoff walk and eventually scored from third on a RBI single by Schmidt. Schreiber then retired the Bald Eagles in order in the top of the seventh to improve his record to 3-3 on the season.
Handza keyed the offense, going 2-for-2 with one double, one triple, one run scored, two walks and one stolen base. Schmidt also finished with two hits and two RBI in the victory.
Josh Rote (2-4) suffered the loss despite allowing only one run in 6.0 innings of relief.
In the nightcap, Cal U again scored three runs in the top of first. Junior right fielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) started the rally with a single and scored on a RBI single by senior shortstop
Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels). Schmidt followed with a RBI single before scoring on a RBI double by Ordy.
The Vulcans added to their lead in the second with a RBI double by senior catcher
Stephen Hermann (Levelgreen, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and sacrifice fly by DiMatteo. Lock Haven scored its first run of the game in the fourth before Cal U countered with two runs in the top of the fifth, 7-1. With runners on first and second, Ordy lined a RBI single to right field before Schmidt scored on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lock Haven took advantage of two errors and plated five unearned runs to make it a 7-6 contest. Cal U added an insurance run in the seventh with a RBI single from Ordy.
Freshman
Pat Gannon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) earned the win after allowing six runs (one earned) on 11 hits in 5.2 innings. Sophomore
Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) recorded the save after throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
LHU starter Jeremie Cook (3-4) was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for five runs on five hits and three walks.
In the doubleheader, the Vulcans combined for seven extra-base hits and seven stolen bases.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, April 22, with a non-conference doubleheader against Seton Hill University. First pitch at CONSOL Energy Park is set for 1 p.m.
