WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 17) – The No. 29 Vulcans managed a doubleheader split with Lock Haven University on Friday at CONSOL Energy Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, falling 5-4 before winning the nightcap 6-4.
With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team moves to 28-11 overall and 13-5 in league play. Entering the final week-plus of the regular season, the Vulcans have now clinched a berth in PSAC Championship Tournament, but seeding position still remains to be determined. Lock Haven remains at .500 in league play at 9-9 and 16-28 overall.
In the doubleheader, Cal U belted three homers to tie the single-season school record of 44 set both in 1998 and 2003.
In the nightcap, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly before senior third baseman
Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) lined a RBI single in the third, 2-0. Senior centerfielder
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run homer (fifth of the season).
The Bald Eagles rallied to tie the score at 4-4 in the fifth after scoring four unearned runs, including a game-tying, two-run homer by first baseman Matt Palko. Cal U reclaimed the lead in the fifth when senior catcher
Stephen Hermann (Levelgreen, Pa./Penn-Trafford) lined a two-out RBI single, scoring sophomore second baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler), 5-4. The Vulcans added an insurance run in the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage on a sacrifice fly by Schmidt.
Sophomore
Sean Welsh (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) earned his first win of the season after working 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only two hits. Senior starter
Jon Squeglia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) took a no decision after allowing four runs (all unearned) in 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Sophomore Jordan Yohn (3-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits in a complete game.
Selby finished the game, going 2-for-3 with one homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior right fielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) and Hermann both finished the game with two hits, while Schmidt collected two RBI.
In Game 1, the Vulcans trailed twice in the game before evening the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth. However, Lock Haven third baseman Mark Strouse hit the eventual game-winning homer to start the seventh off Schmidt. Sophomore Andrew Simonik (2-7) retired Cal U in order in the seventh as the Vulcans lost their second-straight one-run game.
The Bald Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second before Ordy evened the score with his first career homer in the bottom of the inning. Lock Haven plated two runs in the third before the Vulcans trimmed the score to 3-2 on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. After the Bald Eagles stretched its lead to 4-2 with a run in the fifth, DiMatteo tied the game with a two-run longball (11th of the season) to left field.
Junior
Ryan Lavrusky (Temple Terrace, Fla./King) had a no-decision after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings. He issued no walks and registered four strikeouts.
Freshman leftfielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and Ordy combined for half of the Vulcans' eight hits in Game 1, as each player posted two-hit games.
The Vulcans conclude their series with the Bald Eagles tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Lock Haven, Pa.

Lock Haven announced earlier in the day that it is discontinuing the baseball program following the 2009 season due to primarily fiscal reasons.
