SOUTH PARK, Pa. (April 11) – The No. 12 Vulcans earned the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division title outright on Saturday with a 9-0 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Glen Creek Tennis Club.
The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team has now won the PSAC West crown in five-straight seasons. In dual action this season, the Vulcans hold an 18-2 overall record and 5-0 mark in league play. In the five divisional matches this season, Cal U compiled an impressive 37-0 combined record.
Meanwhile, IUP falls to 3-15 overall and 0-3 in divisional action this year.
The Vulcans claimed a sweep in doubles play against the Crimson Hawks after not allowing IUP to win a game. The top-ranked regional doubles team of graduate student
Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) and freshman
Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) topped the IUP sister doubles team of Alyssa and Emily Shubra by 8-0 count at first doubles. Sophomore
Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and freshman
Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) collected an 8-0 victory against Kelsey Herrmann and Kerri Kely at the second slot. Sophomore
Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) and
Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) dealt Crimson Hawks' Meghan Kuhns and Kristi Jacobson an 8-0 defeat.
In singles play, Cal U won five of the six matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores and IUP won only one game in the other match. VanEysendeyk and Stanila – both nationally-ranked singles players – earned 6-0, 6-0 victories at the first and second positions, respectively. Fernandez claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win against Kelly at the third slot, while Kowalski posted a similar score against Jacobson. Freshman
Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Herrmann and sophomore
Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) finished with the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Kuhns.
The Vulcans conclude their regular season on Monday, April 13, with a dual match against Carnegie Mellon University, the third-ranked team in the nation in Division III. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start in Pittsburgh.
