WASHINGTON (March 31) - Behind two solid starting-pitching performances, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep against Ohio Valley University (W.Va.) on Tuesday at CONSOL Energy Park, winning 7-1 and 11-5.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 20-7 overall with a 6-1 mark at home this season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 8-19 overall.
Senior third baseman
Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the offense with four RBI in the twinbill and was one of three players to collect three hits. Freshman left fielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler), sophomore second baseman
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) and senior shortstop
Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) each registered three RBI in the doubleheader.
In Game 1, freshman pitcher
Pat Gannon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) improved his record to 2-1 after allowing only one hit in five-plus innings. The right-hander allowed two walks and registered one strikeout while on the mound.
Offensively, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) before Handza delivered a two-run single in the second.
The Fighting Scots look to cut into the deficit in the sixth with one out and the bases loaded. However, junior reliever
Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) induced an inning-ending double play to keep Ohio Valley off the scoreboard. Cal U sealed the victory with four runs in the bottom of the inning to stretch its lead to 7-0. Schmidt posted a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it a 5-0 contest. After a sacrifice fly added another run, sophomore designated hitter
Chuck Faust (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) added a RBI single.
Schreiber registered his second save of the season after yielding one run in two innings of relief. Freshman Cory McCune suffered the loss for the Fighting Scots after allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks.
Handza and junior right fielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) each collected two hits in the opener, while Handza and Schmidt posted a pair of RBI.
In the nightcap, freshman
Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. Senior Kellen Shepherd was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for six runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks in 3.0 innings.
The Cal U offense took a 2-0 lead in the first on two-out RBI singles by Busti and Ordy before adding three runs in the second, 5-0. In the second inning, Handza scored on a wild pitch and Busti delivered a two-out, two-run single.
The Vulcans continued to mount runs in the early going, as they scored at least one run in the first five innings and held an 11-0 lead entering the top of the sixth.
Busti led the offense in Game 2, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs. Schmidt and Ordy each posted multi-hit and multi-RBI games in the nightcap. DiMatteo collected a hit in both games of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to 16 games (27-for-59; .458 average).
In the two games against the Fighting Scots, Cal U collected 23 hits for a .469 average (23-for-49) and committed no errors.
