Cal U claims 9-5 win over Kutztown

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 2) – Five players posted multi-hit games on Monday, as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team posted a 9-5 win over Kutztown University at the Savannah Invitational, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic University.

The Vulcans improve to 4-0 overall this season, while the Golden Bears fall to 8-3. Last season, Cal U split a pair of game with Kutztown in the spring invitational before the Golden Bears eventually won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Tournament

Infielders Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) and Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) both collected three hits with Busti coming only a homer shy of hitting for the cycle. Seniors Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton), along with junior Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center), all registered two hits in the victory.

Senior starter Jon Squeglia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) earned the victory and improved to 2-0 this season after throwing six innings. Classmate Corry Ryan (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) worked the final three innings of relief to record the save.

Cal U is scheduled to continue play in the Savannah Invitational tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3, against Kutztown University as part of a make-up from yesterday's cancellations. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
