SALEM, W.Va. (March 18) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday against Salem International University, winning 11-6 and 10-1.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 14-5 overall.
In the doubleheader opener, five different Cal U players posted a multi-hit game. Outfielders
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) and
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) each posted three hits with DiMatteo falling only a homer shy of the cycle.
Senior
Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), sophomore
Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) and freshman
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) all collected two hits in the game. Ordy also registered three RBI.
Freshman
Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) earned his third win of the season and registered five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The Vulcans cruised to a 10-1 victory in the nightcap behind six strong innings by sophomore
Nick Allwein (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), who collected his first collegiate win. Allwein issued no walks and recorded two strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Sophomore
Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Schmidt each posted a pair of hits, while freshman
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) belted a solo homer.
In the two games against Salem International, Cal U recorded a combined 13 stolen bases.
The Vulcans return to conference play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Clarion University, beginning with a road twinbill on Friday, March 20.
