Baseball splits at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (March 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team earned a split of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubleheader against Slippery Rock University at Jack Critchfield Park on Saturday. The Vulcans have won three of the four regular-season games against The Rock after posting an 8-3 victory in Game 1.

With the split, Cal U improves to 11-5 on the season with a 3-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock holds an 11-7 overall record and 1-3 record in divisional action. The Rock entered the weekend ranked No. 18 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II pol.

In Game 1, the Vulcans registered an 8-3 victory after belting two homers and holding off a sixth-inning Rock rally. Senior center fielder Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) and senior catcher Stephen Hermann (Levelgreen, Pa./Penn-Trafford) collected solo homers in the victory, while Selby, along with right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) and senior third baseman Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park), each posted multi-hit games.

Sophomore transfer Chris Plummer (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Westlane) earned his second win of the season after allowing three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings. Freshman Anthony Lamont (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) and Schmidt combined to work 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory.

In the nightcap, Cal U suffered a 12-2 loss and the Vulcans were limited to a season-low five hits. Senior Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) engineered the only runs in the game, bashing a two-run homer in the sixth inning (second of the season).

On the hill, starter Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings.

The Vulcans return to action on Monday, March 16, when they host Wheeling Jesuit University for a nine-inning game at CONSOL Energy Park. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
