WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 13) – After mounting a game-winning four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 and solid pitching in Game 2, the Vulcans claimed a doubleheader sweep against Slippery Rock University on Friday at CONSOL Energy Park in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West openers for both teams.

The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 10-4 overall this season with a 2-0 league mark. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock falls to 10-6 and 0-2 in divisional action.

Down to their final out with the bases loaded, sophomore Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) lined a two-run, pinch-hit single to give the Vulcans a thrilling 6-5 comeback victory. Cal U started the seventh down 5-2 after The Rock added two insurance in the top half of the inning. Junior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) led off the inning with a double before advancing to third on a single by senior centerfielder Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton). The Vulcans cut the lead to 5-4 after a RBI single by senior shortstop Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) and sacrifice fly. With two outs, junior Kurt Thomas (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) was hit by a pitch setting up the bases-loaded situation for Ordy.

Junior Ryan Lavrusky (Temple Terrace, Fla./ King/Waynesburg) tossed his first complete game of the season, allowing five runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Junior J.T. Thomas suffered the loss in relief, yielding the game-tying and game-winning runs while working 0.2 inning.

Busti went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. DiMatteo and freshman second baseman Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) each collected a pair of hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, senior Jon Squeglia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) scattered only three hits in a seven-inning, complete-game shutout. He faced only 24 batters in seven innings and allowed only base runner to move into scoring position (lead-off double in the sixth).

Cal U plated runs in both the first and second innings before DiMatteo belted a solo homer (fifth of season) to leadoff the bottom of the fifth inning. The Vulcans added an insurance run in the sixth.

The season series between Cal U and Slippery Rock continues tomorrow, Saturday March, 14, when The Rock hosts a doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park.
