INSTITUTE, W.Va. (March 11) – Behind four home runs, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team claimed a doubleheader sweep with wins of 5-4 and 9-7 against West Virginia State University on Wednesday.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 8-4 this season.
In the opener, senior
Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and junior
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) each belted homers. Senior outfielder
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) posted a multi-hit game in the victory.
Freshman
Anthony Lamont (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) earned the victory in relief, while junior
Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) registered the save.
Selby anchored the offense in the nightcap two hits, highlighted by a three-run homer. Senior catcher
Stephen Hermann (Levelgreen, Pa./Penn-Trafford) also belted a two-run longball, while senior
Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) and freshman
Kyle Bowser (Stoystown, Pa./North Star) added a pair of hits.
On the mound, freshman
Jim Kirker (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) picked up the win to improve to 2-0.
In addition to the homers, the Vulcans were aggressive on the bases, recording 11 stolen bases in the two games.
Cal U returns to action on Friday, March 13, with its home and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-West openers against Slippery Rock University, which is ranked No. 18 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll. The first game at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Pa., is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
