CALIFORNIA (Dec. 1) – Sophomore forward
Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) led four players scoring in double-figures, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team posted a 68-62 victory over Lake Erie on Tuesday night at Hamer Hall.
The win marked the 400th career victory for head coach
Bill Brown, who is in his 14th season with the Vulcans after serving as head coach at both Sacramento State and Kenyon. Brown is one of only two active head coaches in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and 29 throughout NCAA Division II to reach the 400-win milestone.
With their fourth-straight win, the Vulcans improve to 4-1 this year and have now won six of their last seven home-openers. Meanwhile, the Storm drop to 2-6 overall this season.
Williams posted 14 points on six-of-nine shooting in 23 minutes off the bench. True freshman guard
Ryne Niemiec (Brownsville, Pa./Beth-Center) finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists while sophomore guard
Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) added 10 points off the bench.
Senior guard
Jerial Nixon (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain Admiral King) posted eight points and a team-high nine rebounds and junior forward
Andrew Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham) collected eight points and six rebounds.
Leading by three points in the opening five minutes of the game, Cal U mounted a 16-4 rally over a span of six-plus minutes to take a 25-10 lead with 9:35 left before halftime. During the run, the Vulcans forced four turnovers and scored 10 of their 16 points from inside the paint. Lake Erie cut the deficit to six points before Cal U countered with a 7-2 run to take a 38-27 lead with 1:50 remaining before the break. The Vulcans eventually took a 38-31 lead into halftime after shooting over 50 percent in the opening half.
Early in the second half, the Storm trimmed the deficit to four before points before the Vulcans scored nine-straight point to claim a 49-36 lead with 15:24 remaining in the game. Lake Erie worked the deficit down to two points, 58-56, but Cal U scored the next six points, capped with a fast-break dunk by
Kelsey Williams, with 4:06 left to reclaim the momentum.
For the game, the Vulcans shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the floor while the Storm made 35.7 percent (20-of-56) of their shots. Cal U dominated from in the paint, scoring 36 points from in close and registering a season-high eight blocks.
Cal U continues its homestand on Saturday, Dec. 5, when it hosts Glenville State at 3 p.m. in Hamer Hall.
