HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Oct. 20) – The Vulcans' win streak ended at 15 matches on Tuesday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (21-25, 30-28, 24-26, 22-25) to Juniata (Pa.), the second-ranked team in NCAA Division III and a perennial national program.
The loss drops Cal U to 22-5 overall this season, while the Eagles improve to 24-2 and extended its win streak to 12 matches.
Senior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), who was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, led the Vulcans with 19 kills. Sophomore
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished with 15 kills on .444 hitting, while senior
Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) added 10 kills. Senior All-American
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) collected seven kills and four blocks (two solo) in the loss.
Defensively, junior libero
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) anchored the team with 20 digs and Moore posted 15 digs. Senior setter
Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) finished the match with 53 assists, six digs, four kills and three blocks (one solo).
The Vulcans continue their road trip with two PSAC West matches this weekend, beginning on Friday, Oct. 23, at Edinboro. Cal U will then face Gannon in Erie on Saturday, Oct. 24.
