No. 19 Vulcans earn 3-0 win over Juniata

BOSWELL, Pa. (Oct. 23) – Behind a balanced offensive effort, the No. 19 California University of Pennsylvania volleyball recorded a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-18, 25-13) over Juniata College on Thursday night in a non-conference match played at North Star High School.

The Vulcans improve to 31-1 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 23-3 overall. Juniata is currently ranked No. 1 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA0 Division III Coaches poll and is a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion (2004, 2006).

Junior middle hitter Ludmilla Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) led Cal U with 15 kills and four blocks, while hitting at a .346 clip. Classmate Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week, collected 11 kills and five digs.

All-American setter Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) engineered the offense with 34 assists and eight kills, while also adding seven digs and three blocks. Junior libero Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) and senior defensive specialist Mallory DeMarco (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) anchored the defense with 24 and 14 digs, respectively.

Cal U, who holds a 1.5-game lead in the PSAC West standings, returns to divisional play on Tuesday, Oct. 28, with a road match against Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
