Cal U claims win over Slippery Rock, 3-1

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 1) – Senior Shakir McCoy (Huber Heights, Ohio/Tecumseh/Wayne) and junior Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) combined for three goals and one assist in the Vulcans' 3-1 victory over Slippery Rock University on Wednesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in divisional play. Slippery Rock falls to 5-4-1 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Luecke started the Vulcans' offensive attack in the fifth minute with his ninth goal of the season off an assist from senior Evan Picard (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland).

Cal U managed to hold on to the 1-0 throughout the remainder of the first period after not allowing Slippery Rock to manage a shot in the first 45 minutes of the game despite taking four corner kicks.

The Rock evened the score at 1-1 in the opening minutes of the second period on a goal by sophomore Toby Bowser. The Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute with an unassisted goal by McCoy, who has collected points in each of the last three games.

Luecke increased the lead to 3-1 off an assist from McCoy at the 85:23-mark.

Sophomore Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned the victory in net for Cal U, recording two saves on six shot attempts.

The Vulcans held a 13-6 advantage in shot attempts, while the Rock held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Millersville, Pa., for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Millersville University.
