Hawkins collects weekly league laurels

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (March 2) – Following back-to-back 20-point performances, California (PA) sophomore forward Hope Hawkins was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Hawkins averaged 22.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as the Vulcans closed the regular season with a pair of PSAC West victories, highlighted by a win over No. 5 IUP. She shot a combined 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the floor while playing 33.0 minutes per game. Hawkins registered a double-double on Wednesday with 23 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive) in a 74-69 win over the nationally-ranked Crimson Hawks, which entered the game with only one loss this season. The Pittsburgh native shot 11-of-19 from the floor while scoring a career high. Hawkins then posted 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting and seven rebounds in a 91-64 victory against Slippery Rock on Saturday, as the Vulcans held The Rock scoreless until  the 2:13-mark of the first quarter.

In first year as a starter, Hawkins ranks third on the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game and second with 6.2 rebounds per game. She is averaging 17.5 points over the last six games while shooting 58.2 percent (46-of-79) from the field during that span. Hawkins has registered three double-doubles this season after averaging just 6.2 minutes per game as a freshman.

The Vulcans return to action in the PSAC Tournament tonight, Monday, March 2, when they travel to face fourth-seeded Edinboro in the opening round. Tip-off at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 5:30 p.m.
