CALABASH, N.C. (March 14) – Led by a top-10 individual finish by freshman Trent Samelko, the Vulcans opened the spring season by tying for third in the team standings at the three-day Larry and Wally Edgell Battle at Brunswick on Saturday.

TEAM NOTES
• The California (PA) men's golf team shot a 34-over 898 (298-303-297) while competing in an 18-team field at the Brunswick Plantation and Golf Resort.
• Charleston (WV) won the tournament title by six strokes with a 26-over 890 (304-293-293) behind three top-15 individual finishes.
• Bluefield State featured multiple full teams at the event with its 'A' squad finishing second with a 32-over 896 (311-294-291) and its 'B' squad tying Cal at 34-over 898 (308-294-296).

INDIVIDUAL NOTES
• Samelko finished sixth overall with a four-over 220 (77-71-72) behind five birdies at the event.
• He played the final 36 holes at one-under with only two holes over par.
• Samelko, who played in two events during the fall season, led the field of 96 golfers with 40 pars over the three days.
• Junior Gavin Goodrich tied for 13th place after shooting a seven-over 223 (76-76-71) in North Carolina.
• Longwood (VA) freshman Josh Cummins, who was competing as an individual, claimed medalist honors by one stroke at two-under 214 (73-71-70).

NEXT
• Cal is idle for over a week before hosting the Vulcan Fire Classic on March 23-24 at Lone Pine Country Club in Washington, Pennsylvania.
