Men's Golf climbs eight places in second round

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (May 8) – The Vulcans carded one of the lowest scores in the second round on Friday to vault eight places in the team standings at the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Championships, which are hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.

The California (PA) men's golf team shot a 10-over 290 in the second round and now sits in a tie for seventh overall with a 28-over 588 (298-290). Wheeling climbed two slots to first place in the team standings behind a five-over 285 on Friday and holds a two-stroke lead with a 14-over 574 (289-285). Gannon slipped to second place with a 16-over 576 (285-291), while Charleston (WV) and UPJ are tied for third place at 21-over 581.

Sophomore Nixen Erdely fired a one-over 71 on Friday and sits in a tie for 19th place on the individual leader board with a five-over 145 (74-71). He collected four birdies in the second round, including on the par-five, 641-yard 15th hole for a consecutive day. Erdely made the turn at one-under in the second round after playing the front nine at five-over yesterday. The Frazier product then shot a two-over on the back nine on Friday.

Junior Gavin Goodrich is tied for 33rd overall with a six-over 146 (69-77) following a seven-over 77 in the second round. He birdied the par-five ninth and 11th holes for a second-straight day. Fellow junior Jacob Pedley posted a two-over 72 on Friday and is tied for 38th place with a seven-over 147 (75-72). He played the front nine at even-par following a pair of birdies.

Junior Chaz Ekoniak trimmed seven strokes off his round from yesterday by shooting a three-over 73 with three birdies on Friday. He is tied for 75th overall with a 13-over 153 (80-73). Classmate Anthony DePietress entered the lineup in the second round and posted a four-over 74 following three birdies.

Gannon junior Rasmus Seppanen holds a one-stroke lead on the individual leader board with a one-under 139 (67-72) following a two-over 72 in the second round.

Cal closes play at the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Championships tomorrow, Saturday, May 9, with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. The Vulcans are slotted in a later grouping with tee times beginning at 11 a.m.
