LEBANON, Pa. (Oct. 16) – Junior
Nixen Erdely fired a five-under 67 on Friday and sits second overall on the individual leader board following the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.
The California (PA) men's golf team ranks third in the standings with a nine-over 297 after the opening day at Iron Valley Golf Course. Defending-league champion West Chester holds a five-stroke lead after shooting a seven-under 281 with all four scorers posting even-par or better. Gannon sits in second place following 18 holes with a two-under 286. The opening round was delayed by fog and darkness eventually forced two groups to leave two holes unfinished.
Erdely recorded the program's lowest round at the league championships in at least 15 years. He joined Jordan Eck (2012) and Ryan Smith (2017) as the only players to card sub-70 rounds at the PSAC Championships since fall 2008. Erdely finished all 18 holes at birdie or par with his five birdies tying for the fourth-most in the opening day. The Frazier product matched his collegiate-best round after previously shooting a 67 in the final round of the Sunnehanna Collegiate last month.
Seniors
Chaz Ekoniak and
Gavin Goodrich both shot a three-over 75 and are tied for 14th place. Goodrich fired four birdies on the back nine, while Ekoniak played the final nine holes at even-par. Fellow senior
Anthony DePietress carded an eight-over 80 on Friday and is tied for 32nd overall, while freshman
Josh Nesky posted a nine-over 81 with a pair of birdies and is tied for 36th place.
West Chester senior Yamato Kimura holds the individual lead after carding a six-under 66. He carded three birdies on both the front and back nines on Friday.
The Vulcans continue play at the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 17, with the second round set to start at 10 a.m.
