JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (May 7) – Junior
Gavin Goodrich fired a one-under 69 on Thursday and sits in a tie for fourth overall following the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Championships at the Sunnehanna Country Club hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.
The California (PA) men's golf team shot an 18-over 298 on Thursday and ranks No. 15 in the standings at the 20-team event. Gannon leads the team standings by two strokes after the opening round with a five-over 285. Winston-Salem State sits second with a seven-over 287, while Adelphi (NY), Wheeling and host UPJ are tied for third place with a nine-over 289.
Goodrich recorded the program's first sub-70 round at the NCAA Regional Championships since Paul Babashanian in 2011. He collected a staggering seven birdies, the most in the field, during the opening round while shooting a one-under 69. Goodrich made the turn at even-par following three birdies and played the back nine at one-under after totaling four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on par fours to close the round. The West Virginia matched his previous collegiate-best round, as he shot a 69 in the final round at the 2024 Vulcan Invitational.
Sophomore
Nixen Erdely shot a four-over 74 and is tied for 42nd place following the opening round. He played the back nine at one-under after recording a trio of birdies over a seven-hole span. Junior
Jacob Pedley sits one stroke back at five-over 75 and is tied for 54th overall. He posted a pair of birdies in the opening round while making his college debut at the regional championships.
Juniors
Chaz Ekoniak and
Ben Edwards both are tied for 97th place after shooting a 10-over 80. Ekoniak played the back nine at three-over with a birdie on the par-four 416-yard 13th hole, while Edwards shot a three-over before the turn with a birdie on the par-four 403-yard fourth hole.
Gannon junior Rasmus Seppanen and Bently (MA) sophomore Jack Kantowski are tied for the individual lead following the opening round at three-under 67, Kantowski played only one hole over par, while Seppanen tallied six birdies in a 10-hole span.
The Vulcans continue play at the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Championships tomorrow, Friday, May 8, with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. Cal is slotted in the middle grouping with tee times beginning at 10 a.m.
