LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Sept. 10) – Behind one of the most impressive scores in program history, California (PA) junior
Chaz Ekoniak was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week on Wednesday afternoon.
Ekoniak fired an eight-under 134 (66-68) to earn medalist honors at the Wheeling Invitational on Friday. He won the event that featured 85 golfers by two strokes while shooting the lowest 36-hole score in recent program history. Ekoniak carded 11 birdies and played only three holes over par while at the Belmont Country Club. The Ohio native registered a five-under 66 in the opening round on Thursday behind six birdies, 11 pars and a bogey on the par-four fifth – his second hole of the round. Ekoniak helped the Vulcans capture the tournament title at the event that featured players from 11 different programs, including seven teams from the Mountain East Conference.
Last year, Ekoniak ranked second on the team with a scoring average of 75.9 strokes while playing 27 rounds at 11 events. He trimmed his scoring average by nearly 2.5 strokes from his freshman year to his sophomore campaign and tallied a trio of top-10 finishes, including a seventh-place performance at the PSAC Championships in October.
Ekoniak is the first golfer to receive the weekly conference accolade since the 2023 season.
The Vulcans return to action when they co-host the Hannastown Intercollegiate in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 22-23.
