ERIE, Pa. (May 8) – The Vulcans fired their best round at a post-season event in over a decade to close the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Championships in a tie for second place in the team standings on Thursday.
The California (PA) men's golf team shot an 11-over 299 while at Whispering Woods Golf Course. The Vulcans carded a sub-300 round at the event for the first time since accomplishing the feat twice at the 2014 championships hosted by Charleston (WV) at Edgewood Country Club. Cal is tied with host Gannon after 18 holes for second place in the standings at the 20-team event. Davis & Elkins maintains a five-stroke lead following the first day with a six-over 294.
Sophomore
Anthony DePietress and
Chaz Ekoniak are tied for the team lead and 11th overall with a two-over 74 after the opening round. DePietress played the front nine at one-under after firing birdies on three-consecutive holes. He closed the round with six-consecutive pars on Thursday. Ekoniak shot a three-under over an 11-hole span with back-to-back birdies on the back nine.
Senior
Cole Villa sits one stroke back in a tie for 19th place with a three-over 75. He carded a team-leading five birdies in the opening round, including a trio on par fives. Sophomore
Gavin Goodrich shot a four-over 76 and is tied for 27th overall after collecting back-to-back birdies on the back nine. Freshman
Nixen Erdely sits in a tie for 32nd place with a five-over 77 while making his debut at a championship event.
Freshman Aidan Talent of D&E holds a two-stroke lead on the individual leader board after 18 holes with a four-under 68. He played just two holes over par in the opening round and finished with six birdies.
The Vulcans are scheduled to return to the links tomorrow, Friday, May 9, with their tee times beginning at 10:50 a.m.
