Guldimann earns weekly league accolade

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (March 4) – After helping the team earn two dual wins yesterday, California (PA) junior Leandra Guldimann was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

Guldimann opened the spring campaign with a combined three victories on Monday, as the Vulcans earned a pair of wins while in Florida. Against St. Cloud State (Minn.), she opened play with a 6-2 victory at first doubles with junior Teddi Isherwood in the lone doubles win of the match for Cal. Guldimann then posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Maria Paz Aoki at second singles with the Vulcans securing a 5-2 match win over the Huskies, which won the previous two meetings in the series. The junior from Switzerland later claimed a 6-2 win at second singles on Monday against Izzy Szmodis of Moravian (Pa.), which is a NCAA Division III program that has played in five-consecutive finals of the Landmark Conference Tournament, in a 7-0 victory by Cal.

A 5-foot-6 junior, Guldimann paces the team with a career-high nine wins in singles play this year behind a 6-1 mark at the second position. She also is tied for the team lead with 10 victories in doubles action behind a 9-2 mark with Isherwood.

Guldimann received the weekly league honor for the first time in her career. Cal has featured a recipient of the accolade in each of the past four seasons after totaling just one honoree the previous five years.

The Vulcans resume play in Florida tomorrow, Wednesday, March 5, against Sioux Falls (SD) at 3 p.m. The Cougars advanced to the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Tournament last spring and return the 2024 NSIC Freshman of the Year.
