INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 19) – The California (PA) women's basketball program was listed among the top 10 teams from the Atlantic Region in consideration for the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday evening.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid with the top-five remaining teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids.
This marks the third-consecutive year in which the first set of regional rankings are listed in alphabetical order with no numerical ranking. The NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee will slot the teams in numerical order for the first time with the second set of regional rankings, which will be announced next week.
The PSAC boasts an overwhelming seven teams in the initial rankings with the CIAA placing a pair of teams and the MEC featuring a single school this week. Cal boasts the best strength of schedule in the region, which is comprised of 41 teams, and holds a region RPI among the top 10 overall in the region. The Vulcans have already played nine games this season against the teams featured in the first set of regional rankings.
Joining Cal in the initial listing from the PSAC were Edinboro, Gannon, IUP, Kutztown, Lock Haven and Seton Hill. The duo of Fayetteville State and Virginia State represent the CIAA in the rankings, while MEC-member Fairmont State was also featured in the teams under consideration.
The regional rankings will be released the next two weeks before the final rankings and NCAA Tournament selections are announced on March 9.
Note, rankings and records are reflective thru games as of Sunday, Feb. 16.
