Vulcans move to fourth in second round

LEBANON, Pa. (Oct. 18) – The Vulcans climbed to fourth in the team standings after firing the second-lowest score during the second round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The California (PA) men's golf team shot an eight-over 296 in the second round and sits fourth overall at the league championships with a 22-over 598 (302-296). Pitt-Johnstown holds an eight-stroke lead entering the final round after shooting a 10-over 586 (299-287) through 36 holes. West Chester ranks second in the team standings with an 18-over 594 (295-299), while defending-league champion Gannon stands third at 21-over 597 (300-297).

Junior Gavin Goodrich carded a one-over 73 on Saturday and is tied for sixth place with a three-over 147 (74-73). He made the turn at one-under in the second round before recording an eagle on the par-five 16th. Goodrich previously placed as high as 10th at the league championships as a freshman.

Sophomore Nixen Erdely and junior Ben Edwards are tied for 10th overall at five-over 149. Edwards (74-75) was at even-par through 11 holes on Saturday before finishing at three-over 75. He ranks tied for second in the field with 25 pars through two rounds. Erdely (74-75) played the back nine at one-over in the second round to also finish the day at three-over. He is tied for the team with six birdies, including a pair on par fives on Saturday.

Junior Chaz Ekoniak shot a one-over 73 on Saturday and moved into a tie for 23rd place at nine-over 153 (80-73). He birdied the par-five 16th for a consecutive day and is tied with Ekoniak for the team lead with six birdies at the league championships. Junior Anthony DePietress posted a six-over 78 in the second round and stands 37th overall at 16-over 160 (82-78). He tallied an eagle on the par-five third on Saturday, becoming the only golfer in the field with multiple eagles this weekend.

UPJ sophomore Lucas Smith claimed the individual lead in the second round after shooting a three-under 69. He holds a three-stroke lead entering the final 18 holes with a three-under 141 (72-69) after playing only three holes over par across two rounds.

Cal closes play at the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 19, with tee times starting at 9 a.m.
