Preview: NCAA Subregional Tournament

CALIFORNIA (March 14) – The California (PA) women's basketball team returns to the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time in program history this weekend when it travels to the Hagerty Family Events Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.

LOCATION
The Atlantic Subregional Tournament will be hosted by Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at the Hagerty Family Events Center [501 West 12th Street | Erie, PA 16501]. Note, the games are being played at Cathedral Prep due to significant renovations at Highmark Events Center (formerly Hammermill Center) – the longtime home facility of the Golden Knights.

TICKET INFORMATION
Tickets will be available for purchase at the door of the Hagerty Family Events Center on day of game with sales beginning one hour before the first game. There will NOT be any online ticket sales. Fans will purchase a ticket each day of the tournament. Cash or credit/debit cards will be accepted but note there will be a processing fee for cards. Tickets are available at the prices of $15 chairback, $10 general admission and $5 general admission for students.

VIDEO OPTIONS ($$$)
Live video is available on a pay-per-view basis for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. A single-game pass is available for $9.95 plus fees and allows live access with the ability watch on-demand. There is also a NCAA Championships Pass for $29.95 plus fees that allows live and on-demand access to games from the first, second and third rounds of the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Additionally, there is a pass for $49.95 plus fees that allows live and on-demand access to both the 2024 NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments for the first, second and third rounds.

SCHEDULE
Gannon is hosting subregionals for both men's and women's basketball this weekend at the Hagerty Family Events Center. The women's tournament will feature games on Friday, March 15, at 12 p.m. [California vs. Lock Haven] and 2:30 p.m. [West Virginia State at Gannon]. The advancing teams will play in the regional semifinals on Saturday, March 16, at 5 p.m. Location of the regional championship on Tuesday, March 19, will be determined by the advancing teams from the two subregional sites [Gannon, Fairmont State].

THE FIELD
Scouting (1) Gannon:
The Golden Knights (32-2) enter the tournament on an eight-game winning streak after capturing their third PSAC Championship in the last four seasons. Gannon ranks second in the country in field-goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to only a .340 clip and 52.6 points per game. Senior forward Samantha Pirosko repeated as the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and is averaging 19.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this year. She ranks third among active players in NCAA Division II with 2,198 career points, which is fifth-most in PSAC history.

Scouting (4) Lock Haven: The Bald Eagles (28-3) received an at-large berth following an appearance in the finals of the PSAC Tournament as the top seed in the Eastern Division. Lock Haven ranks among the top 10 in NCAA Division II with 4.9 blocks per game and a plus-8.0 rebounding margin. The Bald Eagles boasted both the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year and PSAC East Freshman of the Year in 2024. Sophomore Alana Robinson sits eighth in the nation with 2.55 blocks per game while also shooting 88.2 percent from the free-throw line, which is among the top 15 in the country.

Scouting (5) California: The Vulcans (23-8) earned an at-large berth after using a nine-game winning streak to advance to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament. California sits No. 10 in the nation with 16.0 offensive rebounds per game behind the play of a pair of All-PSAC West forwards. Redshirt senior Dejah Terrell ranks among the top 15 in the country with 14 double-doubles while averaging 15.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Scouting (8) West Virginia State: The Yellow Jackets (21-10) earned an at-large berth after advancing to the finals of the MEC Tournament as the second seed. WVSU leads the nation with 48.42 rebounds per game and ranks second in the country with 41.5 bench points per game behind a rapid substitution rotation. The Yellow Jackets featured a trio of All-MEC selections with Shelby Harmeyer ranking among the league's top long-range shooters with 2.65 three-pointers made per game and a .369 three-point percentage.
