California sits among Atlantic Region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 21) – The California (PA) men's basketball program was listed among the 10 teams from the Atlantic Region in consideration for the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday evening.

The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid with the top-five remaining teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids.

This marks the second-straight year in which the first set of regional rankings are listed in alphabetical order with no numerical ranking. The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee will slot the teams in numerical order for the first time with the second set of regional rankings, which will be announced next week.

The PSAC and MEC each occupy half of the teams in the initial rankings, as no CIAA school was featured this week. Cal features one of the top strength of schedules among the teams under consideration and boasts a .593 region RPI, which is second-best in the entire Atlantic Region. The Vulcans have posted a 3-1 record this year against the teams featured in the first set of regional rankings.

Joining Cal in the initial listing from the PSAC were East Stroudsburg, Gannon, Lock Haven and Millersville. The top-five teams in the MEC standings [Charleston (W.Va.), Concord, Fiarmont State, West Liberty, West Virginia State] were also included in the initial rankings.

The regional rankings will be released the next two weeks before the final rankings and NCAA Tournament selections are announced on March 10.

Note, rankings and records are reflective thru games as of Sunday, Feb. 18.
