ERIE, Pa. (March 14) – Led by a furious start to the second half, the fourth-seeded Vulcans claimed a 96-83 win over fifth-seeded Fayetteville State (NC) on Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Highmark Events Center.
With the victory, the California (PA) men's basketball team improves to 23-8 this season and advances to face top-seeded and host Gannon tomorrow, Sunday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. The Vulcans have advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of their three appearances under head coach
Danny Sancomb. Meanwhile, the Broncos finish the year with a 23-7 overall record after winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship for the third time in program history.
Redshirt junior
Bryson Lucas scored a career-high 33 points on 14-of-21 shooting. He is the first Cal player to record a 30-point game in the NCAA Tournament since the turn of the century. Lucas also added 16 rebounds (four offensive), five assists and two steals while playing 35 minutes. The West Virginia native now ranks No. 25 all-time in school history with 1,175 points.
Sophomore
Jordyn Buchanan finished with 23 points behind six-of-nine from beyond the arc with the six three-pointers tying his career high. He also posted seven rebounds and three assists in the victory. Redshirt sophomore
Antoine Arnett collected 10 points and six rebounds, while senior
Brayden Reynolds set a career high with 13 assists, along with seven points, six rebounds and two steals. The 13 assists are the highest single-game total in over two decades.
Junior
Joshua Ray tallied eight points, four rebounds and four blocks off the bench, while junior
Dalman Alexander finished with seven points, four rebounds and two blocks.
The teams traded three-pointers to open the game before the Vulcans posted a 9-3 run to take a 16-12 lead at the 16:21-mark. Fayetteville State countered with an 8-2 rally to tie the score at 14-14 just after the initial media timeout. The Broncos later mounted another 8-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 26-25, with 9:48 left in the first half. Cal then scored the next five points to reclaim the lead at 30-26 before Alexander was whistled for his second foul following a three-pointer by Fayetteville State with 8:17 remaining. Buchanan, who had already made a trio of three-pointers, was forced to the bench just over a minute later after the Broncos took a 33-32 lead. The Vulcans responded with an 8-4 run to claim a 40-37 lead with 4:47 left before the break. Cal was then held without a field goal until just before the buzzer when Lucas scored on an alley-oop layup off an inbound pass, as Fayetteville State held a 45-44 lead at halftime.
The Broncos scored the opening basket of the second half before the Vulcans mounted a 15-2 run behind 11 points from Buchanan and Lucas to build a 59-49 lead at the 17:11-mark. Cal later scored 12-straight points over three minutes, highlighted by three fastbreak dunks, to stretch the lead to a commanding 74-54 margin with 11:54 remaining. The Vulcans later went nearly three minutes without a field goal, as the Broncos mounted an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to 93-80 with 1:48 left to play.
Cal finished the game shooting 48.6 percent (36-of-74) from the floor after going 19-of-35 (54.3 percent) in the second half. Meanwhile, the Broncos made a 35.3 clip (30-of-85) from the field and converted 14-of-21 from the charity stripe after entering the post-season with nearly 1,000 free-throw attempts – the most in all NCAA divisions. Fayetteville State held a slim 56-54 rebounding advantage behind 22 offensive rebounds. The Vulcans were credited with 29 assists in the win.
Fayetteville State senior Ezekiel Cannedy led the team with 20 points on 7-of-21 shooting, including 4-of-12 from long range. Senior Larry Howell, the CIAA Player of the Year, recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds despite being held to three points in the second half.
Cal returns to action tomorrow when it faces Gannon for the fourth time this season in a rematch of last weekend's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship. The Vulcans have dealt the Golden Knights two of their three losses this season. Gannon advanced to the second round with an 83-58 win over eighth-seeded Charleston (WV) on Saturday evening.
