Vulcans finish sixth at championships

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 26) – Senior Noah Bernarding placed third overall on Saturday morning, as the Vulcans placed sixth in the team standings at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships hosted by Kutztown.

The California (PA) men's cross country team finished with a total of 166 points, marking their second-best score at the league championships in the last nine years. Additionally, the Vulcans have registered a top-six finish at the conference meet in three-consecutive seasons. Shippensburg repeated as PSAC Champions with a score of 28 points on Saturday behind five top-10 runners. East Stroudsburg placed second in the team standings with 83 points and IUP ranked third at the league race with 104 points.

Bernarding recorded the best individual finish of his career while garnering All-PSAC honors for the fifth time in his cross country career. He posted a time of 25 minutes, 37.1 seconds over the eight-kilometer course to finish just 2.3 seconds behind the overall winner. Bernarding received All-PSAC First-Team status for a consecutive year after finishing in 10th place at the championships last fall. The Vulcans have featured a top-three runner at the league meet twice in the last three years, as Jonathan Thrush placed third in 2022.

Thrush finished 11th overall on Saturday with a time of 25:55.2 after competing for the first time in six weeks. He earned All-PSAC First-Team laurels for the fourth time after placing among the top 15 in each of his appearances at the conference meet.

Junior George Boutiller registered the top finish of his career on Saturday after crossing the finish line in 41st place with a time of 26:59.65. Sophomore Jon Berzonsky posted a time of 27:29.8 to finish 59th overall, while sophomore Jordan Wiedman rounded out the team scorers in 66th place with a time of 27:36.2.

Shippensburg junior Garrett Quinan won the race by 1.7 seconds with a time of 25:34.8 to become the first repeat winner at the PSAC Championships since Alex Monroe of Lock Haven from 2011-13.

The Vulcans are idle next week before competing at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships on Nov. 9 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.
