LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (May 2) – Following a pair standout distance performances over the weekend, California (PA) freshman
Jonathan Thrush (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Track Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday afternoon.
Thrush competed in the 10,000-meter run at the Penn Relays on Thursday before returning to action two days later in the 5,000-meter run at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg. He improved his personal record in the 10K by nearly 19 seconds while at the Penn Relays when he finished ninth overall with a time of 30 minutes, 8.43 seconds in a field of 22 entries. Thrush now boasts the top 10K time in the PSAC by over 49 seconds and is the lone entry in the league to reach the NCAA provisional mark this spring.
On Saturday, Thrush placed second overall behind an unattached entry in the 5K with a time of 15:15.97 while at Shippensburg. The 5-foot-10 freshman was competing in the event for the first time this outdoor season and reached the conference standard to qualify for the league championships.
Thrush becomes the program's first recipient of PSAC Track Athlete of the Week laurels since the 2020 indoor campaign. In cross country during the fall, he was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year after earning an individual qualifier to compete at the NCAA National Championships.
Cal returns to action on Saturday, May 6, at the WVU Last Chance Meet before competing at the PSAC Championships on May 11-13.
