Cal finishes fourth at PSAC Championships

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (May 13) – The Vulcans placed fourth in the team standings at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday to mark their highest finish at a league meet – indoor or outdoor – since the 2008 outdoor campaign.

The California (PA) men's track & field team scored in 15 events and amassed 87 points, its highest total since finishing in fourth place with 93.5 points at the 2008 outdoor championships. Shippensburg captured its 14th-consecutive league title with 177 points while scoring in all but two of the 21 events over the weekend. Host Slippery Rock placed second with 128 points and East Stroudsburg finished third in the team standings with 113 points.

Sophomore Logan Pfister (Fishertown, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) captured his third career league title in the high jump on Saturday. He tied his outdoor personal best and reached the NCAA provisional mark by clearing 2.04 meters (6-8.25 feet) on his first attempt at the height. Pfister opened the event by clearing 1.93 meters (6-4.0 feet) before advancing to 1.98 meters (6-6.0 feet) and 2.01 meters (6-7.0 feet). The Chestnut Ridge product earned All-PSAC status in the event for the fourth time in his career after previously winning the event at the indoor league championships in both 2022 and 2023.

Senior Avery Boea-Gisler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) repeated as an All-PSAC honoree in the 400-meter hurdles at Slippery Rock. He placed second in the event and set a personal record by rounding the track in 53.48 seconds, topping his personal best set yesterday by four-hundredths of a second.

The Vulcans scored a pair of entries in the triple jump with senior Jalen Cloud (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski) earning All-PSAC status in the event for the fourth time in his career. He placed second in the event and reached the NCAA provisional standard with a mark of 14.78 meters (48-6.0 feet) on his final attempt. Freshman Brendin Marks (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) finished eighth overall in the triple jump on Saturday with a personal-best distance of 14.07 meters (46-2.0 feet) on his second attempt.

Senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) received All-PSAC laurels for the first time in his track & field career by finishing third in the 800-meter run. He established a personal record in the event by posting a time of 1 minute, 53.38 seconds, topping his personal best set yesterday by over 1.2 seconds.

In the sprints, senior Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) scored in both the finals of the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash on Saturday. He placed fourth overall in the 100 meters with a time of 10.73 seconds and finished the 200 meters in fourth place at 21.71 seconds.

Junior Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) also scored in multiple events on the final day of the league championships. He placed fourth overall in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.11 and finished in eighth place in the 800 meters at 1:58.05.

The 4x400-meter relay of Lytle, freshman Aidan McMahon (Johnstown, Pa./Richland), Bernarding and Boea-Gisler set a season-best time and finished eighth overall with a time of 3:20.26. Cal also placed eighth in the finals of the 4x100-meter relay on Saturday, as senior Tyrese Canada (Richmond, Va./Henrico), McMahon, senior John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and Lytle posted a time of 53.76 seconds.

Senior Ethan Moyer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored in the javelin throw by finishing fifth in the event with a distance of 57.76 meters (189-6.0 feet). Freshman Jonathan Thrush (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) also placed fifth overall in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday with a season-best time of 15:02.13.

The Vulcans reached the NCAA provisional standard in six individual events during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
