SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (May 12) – Freshman
Daniel Munro (Brookhaven, Pa./Penncrest) shattered the decade-old school record and captured the league title in the pole vault on Friday afternoon during the second day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.
Munro became the first pole vaulter – men's or women's – to win the event at the league meet in recent school history (since 2008) while also reaching the NCAA provisional standard. He claimed the conference crown by clearing a height of 4.82 meters (15-9.75 feet) on his first attempt at the height. Munro broke the mark of 4.66 meters (15-3.5 feet) set by Mitch Codd when he finished third at the 2012 PSAC Championships. The Penncrest product opened the event at 4.57 meters (15.0 feet) and then cleared 4.72 meters (15-5.75), both on his third and final attempt. Munro entered the championships seeded fourth on the league's performance list and is only the second league entry to reach the NCAA mark this spring.
Additionally, Munro scored in the decathlon at the league championships with a season-high 5,908 points. He placed second in both the 100-meter dash and pole vault, plus finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, as part of the decathlon.
The Vulcans rank fourth in the team standings with 27 points after seven events at the league championships. Shippensburg sits in first place with a sizable lead after totaling 80 points over two days, while East Stroudsburg ranks second with 38.5 points and host Slippery Rock is in third place with 31 points.
