SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (May 11) – Freshman
Jonathan Thrush (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) posted a second-place finish in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday night, as the California (PA) men's track & field team competed in three events on the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.
Thrush earned All-PSAC status in the 10,000 meters by placing second overall with a time of 31 minutes, 26.26 seconds. He led the event for the majority of the race before dropping to as far back as fourth place at 8,400 meters. Thrush then posted a split of 1:10.27 on the 23rd lap to climb back to second place before using a kick of 1:03.78 – his fastest split of the race – over the last 400 meters. The 5-foot-10 freshman is the program's first All-PSAC honoree in the event Aaron Dinzeo won the 10,000 meters at the 2014 league championships.
Senior
Sam Rothstein (Sykesville, Md./Century) placed 10th overall in the hammer throw with a heave of 47.56 meters (156-0.0 feet) on his final attempt. Last spring, he finished in 15th place in the event at the league championships after previously being a three-sport athlete at Muhlenberg (Pa.), a NCAA Division III program.
The Vulcans had multiple entries begin competition in the decathlon on Thursday, competing in five of the 10 events. Freshman
Daniel Munro (Brookhaven, Pa./Penncrest) ranks 12th overall with 2,973 points after placing as high as second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.28 seconds. Junior
Colin Finkbiner (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) has totaled 2,682 points and sits in 15th place after the opening day.
Only two of the 21 championship events were scored on the opening day and just seven of the 13 teams competing have accounted for points. Shippensburg sits in first place in the team standings with 25 points after accounting for at least a dozen points in both the hammer throw and 10,000 meters. East Stroudsburg ranks second with 15 points, while Edinboro and host Slippery Rock are tied for third with 11 points.
Cal is set to continue the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Friday, May 12, with events starting at 10 a.m.
